Sanjeev Galande of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research ,Pune,is among those who got the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award on Sunday

Sanjeev Galande of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER),Pune,is among those who got the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award on Sunday. Galande got the award for biological sciences for his work on mechanisms of regulations of gene activity,which helps in understanding irregularities in cell behaviour. The awards were instituted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial (CSIR). Galande,who is now with the Epigenetics department of IISER,had done most of his research when he was with National Centre For Cell Sciences (NCCS),Pune. On his work,Galande said,”We found that activity of genes can be controlled by the manner in which they are organised in the nucleus of the cell and the folding principles are epigenetic in nature.”

Ex-Army officer held for molesting minor

The Kondhwa police on Sunday arrested a retired Army officer,Lt Col (retd) Tejinder Singh,for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old girl who used to attend classes conducted by him. Singh,a resident of NIBM Road who runs Aloha Classes,has been charged under Section 354 of the IPC. The girl,a resident of Kondhwa,used to attend classes conducted by Singh for the Abacus maths exam on Sundays. The complaint said Singh had misbehaved with her in his classes on September 12 and 19.
