A survey conducted by the state Family Welfare Bureau in June this year states that the number of girls under six years in Pune district stands at 895 per 1000 boys.

Over the years, the girl-boy sex ratio (0-6 years) has shown a decline in the state. In Pune, there were 943 girls for every 1000 boys in 1991. However,it dipped to 902 girls per 1000 boys in 2001. The recent survey done at the anganwadi level involving 81.7 lakh children in 34 districts of the state shows that the number of girls in Pune has dipped further.

Even as workshops are being held for members of the judiciary to create awareness about the Pre-Conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act,health officials feel that special courts should be set up to expedite cases against errant doctors who misuse the ultrasound to determine the sex of the foetus. At present,94 cases are pending against doctors in the state for flouting provisions of the PC-PNDT Act.
