Sadhana MahajanTWO relatives of key BJP leaders in Maharashtra have been elected unopposed in local self-government body polls — one in Chikhaldhara Municipal Council polls and the other in Jamner Municipal Council polls. In both places, Congress candidates backed the BJP candidates and ensured they were elected unopposed.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ maternal brother Alhad Kalote was contesting the election to become a councillor of the Chikhaldhara Municipal Council in Amravati district. He was fielded by the BJP from Prabhag No 1. The Congress had fielded Shaikh Eshad Shaikh. Along with the Congress candidate, six others withdrew from the fray on Thursday.
After Kalote won unopposed, Congress MLA Yashomati Thakure targeted the CM, alleging that he misused his power to get his relative elected.
In Jamner Municipal Council polls, Sadhana Mahajan, wife of BJP minister Girish Mahajan, who is known for his proximity to the chief minister, also won unopposed as the council president. Three candidates withdrew from the race, including the Congress candidate. Thursday was the last day of withdrawal of nominations. Not just Congress candidate, even the NCP (SP) candidate also withdrew from the race, highlighting the support from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The third candidate belonged to Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
The seat from where Sadhana Mahajan contested was reserved for general category women. Sadhana had filed her papers on Monday amidst a strong show of strength by the BJP. Sadhana earlier served as council president.
Reacting to the development, Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe said, “Money and muscle power of the BJP is working overtime to trample upon all democratic norms. It is for the Election Commission to find out how these elections are becoming unopposed and how unfair means are being used blatantly.”
