(Express Photo) Intruders who had occupied vacant railway quarters at the Central Railway’s Tadiwala Road premise in Pune were evicted by the administration in a two-day drive, starting Wednesday, conducted with the help of local police.
As many as 17 residential quarters located in several multi-storied buildings owned by the railways were illegally occupied by the intruders with the help of local criminal elements by breaking the locks. Officials said that most of the occupied quarters were not being used by the railways as they were in a bad condition.
“On August 22 and 23, the Pune Railway Division acted against the unauthorised individuals who had taken possession of unoccupied rooms of the railway staff quarters situated in Tadiwala Road near the Divisional Railway Manager’s (DRM) office. These quarters lay vacant as they were not allotted to any railway staffer,” said Ramdas Bhise, Divisional Commercial Manager, who also looks after public relations.
A railway team under the supervision of DRM Indu Dubey, Additional Divisional Railway Manager B K Singh and other Pune Division railway officials inspected the quarters on August 22.
“The railways has decided to conduct anti-encroachment drives to free its properties from unauthorised occupation. The first drive was undertaken on Tuesday and Thursday in some locations of Tadiwala Road. We have successfully evicted the unauthorised people from 17 quarters within two days. The drive will continue,” said Bhise.
To ensure that some of the abandoned quarters from where illegal occupants were evicted are not encroached again, the authorities have removed doors and windows of the ground floor quarters and damaged the toilets to discourage the miscreants from occupying them.
“The upper floor rooms have been securely locked with iron rods and the water and electricity connections have been stopped. Cemented walls will also be constructed soon on the stairs to block the passage to the upper floors via the stairs,” Bhise said.
The authorities are also planning to shift the railway employees to alternative residential quarters so that the old quarters can be demolished to free up space.
