In yet another incident of security lapse at the Yerawada Central Prison, a cellphone with a SIM card was recovered from the premises of Security Cell-2 on Saturday morning. This the second incident in last one month and third since September 2013. In the first week of May, a cellphone was recovered from the premises of high security Anda Cell of the jail and in September last year a phone was recovered from the backyard of Circle Number 3. The probe in the September case had revealed that it was used by “notorious goon” Deepak Sapke and over 200 calls had been made from it. Yerawada jail superintendent Yogesh Desai said: “We found a cellphone near the drainage line next to Security Circle No 2. As of now, we do not know who had been using it. We have handed over the phone to the police and an offence has been registered.” Jail authorities said an internal inquiry had also been initiated.Assistant Inspector Chandrakant Jadhav of Yerawada police station, who is investigating the case, said: “We have started our probe, and as of now I can only say that calls have been made from the cellphone and we have identified some people to whom the calls were made. I will only be able to comment further after we have verified the identities.” A senior jail department official said: “This is clearly an example of lapse at the entry point of the jail. It should be seen if anyone from the jail staff is also involved in this. A cellphone was recovered in September 2013. marijuana being taken inside the jail was caught.” Speaking about the installation of cellphone jammers, which has been in the pipeline for the last one year, Desai said: “We have received a consignment of the jammers, they will be installed within 10 days.”
