The Bombay High Court recently pulled up the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for failing to construct the remaining 200-metre stretch of the 1,200-metre-long Baner-Pashan link road.

Last year in August, the Court directed the PMC to acquire land required to complete the Baner-Pashan link road and submit a timeline both for the land acquisition and the construction of the remaining 200-metre stretch.

Hearing a petition filed by Baner Pashan Link Road Welfare Trust, the two-judge high court bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya on Wednesday directed the Pune municipal commissioner to personally look into the matter and file an affidavit within 10 days stating the minimum time required to construct the remaining stretch.

According to the PMC, the new municipal commissioner assumed charge on March 15 this year and issued directions to take expeditious steps for the acquisition of the remaining land on April 16.

In the meantime, possession of 1,290 square metre of land was secured for constructing 35 metre of the remaining 200-metre stretch.

The link road is crucial for connectivity among Baner, Balewadi, and Pashan and will impact over 2,50,000 residents, claimed the petitioner, adding that the road was sanctioned in 1992.

Representing the petitioner, Advocate Satya Muley informed the Court that the PMC has been giving one or the other excuse for non-completion of the road.

Rajendra Chuttar, President, Baner Pashan Link Road Welfare Trust, said, “The PMC failed to acknowledge the high court’s order… taking a full year to submit an affidavit filled with absurd excuses and attempting to further delay the land acquisition process.”
