Anjali Thakur’s family moved from Bihar to Pune ten years ago, dreaming of better education and accessibility for the blind girl. Her father believed she would receive the right education at Jagriti School for the Blind Girls at Alandi Devachi, being run by the National Federation Of The Blind Maharashtra (NFBM) since 1989.

The family’s hope has come to fruition as Anjali has topped the Maharashtra Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Class 10 examinations in her school with 78.2 per cent marks.

Anjali said, “I have been in the school for ten years, and they have taught me very well. The school helped me with travel and mobility as well. They provided me with a mobile to attend online classes during COVID. The school also provided us with Braille textbooks. I studied using textbooks and online resources. I am very happy with my results.”

Anjali’s parents are very proud of her. Her favourite subjects are English and computer science, but she wants to pursue law and become a judge. In her free time, she enjoys listening to songs, writing poems, and eating puran poli.

When asked how the government can make education more accessible for blind people, Anjali said, “The government should think about us so that more blind people can get an education. It is tough to find scribes to write our examination. They should allow us to use computers as they are easier and more accessible.”

Aarti Takwane, the head of the skill development centre of the NFBM, told the Indian Express, “For the past 26 years, the students of NFBM Jagriti School for the Blind Girls, Alandi Devachi, have given 100 per cent results in SSC board exams. Anjali Thakur has topped the class this year with 78.2 per cent, Nikita Sawatkar in second place with 73 per cent, and Vidika Ranerajput and Sriya Verma in third position with 72.8 per cent.”

Nikita, who came second, hails from a small village called Lahri in Nanded and would like to pursue commerce and work in the banking sector. Vedika, who has secured the third position, wants to work in the corporate sector.
