The best of five subjects scheme will continue to be extended to students from Indian Certificate of School Examination (ICSE) Board as well, says an SC verdict.
However, under the system, subjects of group C will not be considered. Students can pick five of the highest scoring subjects from group A and B while calculating percentages during admissions to colleges.
Leena Chowdhary, said,I think the marking system for SSC students has to change. It is usually seen that ICSE students find it easier to score higher marks, but SSC students dont score so high. So unless a level playing field is created for all,SSC students are going to lose out in the process of admissions.
Forum for Fairness in Education president Jayant Jain said,The best part of the verdict is that Group C subjects have been left out. As the Group C subjects are checked by the schools, there could have been chances of discrepancies. But now such a possibility is ruled out. Students and parents were already used to the system after the interim verdict. So this verdict comes as a continuation of the already existing system. Both parents and students are happy with it.
When asked about the implications on admissions next year, deputy director of Education Sunil Magar said,I have not gone through the detailed verdict yet,so Im not in a position to comment on its intricacies. However,we respect the verdict given by the Supreme Court and will definitely abide by it.
