The Babu Nimal Hockey Tournament at the Ammunition Factory ground in Khadki, produced the first two of its semifinalists in the form of Vikram Pillay Academy (VPA),and Pune City Police (PCP) when the two teams defeated Shiloh Sports Club and Green Meadows respectively in the quarter finals on Tuesday.
At the AFK ground,VPA struck first blood in the fifth minute as L Ashutosh ran through a series of defenders of the Shiloh Sports Club (SSC) after he received a fine drag flick pass from their centre forward Alwyn Alexander to set up a one on one clash with the SSC keeper Prem Ba. Prem rushed out, futilely so because Ashutosh drag flicked one right over his head to ensure that the ball found the back of the SSC net.
While the SSC players kept on their toes, not letting the goal bog them down, the difference in the fine tuning of the two teams was evident when VPA were able to corner the SSC forwards on occasions more than one.
And when SSC were looking to threaten the VPA backline,K Ajinkya who found a superb long passs from their forward Shirish Bernard ran unmarked into the SSC goal line.
By the time the defenders found time to react and come back to the goal it was too late as VPA had doubled their lead by then.
The second half of the game saw the battle confined to the SSC half as they tried to keep wave after wave of VPA attacks at bay, when finally in the 46 th minute a defensive lapse on the part of the SSC defence saw Ajinkya run right through unmarked to score a second goal for himself and a third for VPA.
In the other semi final of the evening,Pune City Police easily defeated Green Meadows 2-0 when they scored two goals in quick succession in the first half to dent the Green Meadows team and eventually book themselves a spot in the semifinals.
