A workshop on Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI) was recently held at the regional centre of the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences,Aundh. Conducted jointly with the UNICEF,the workshop had several modules that trained the participants on how to reduce infant mortality.

Manuals with hands-on training on essential Newborn Care and Basic Resuscitation of Newborn(NSSK) was provided. This NSSK programme for newborn care has been recently launched by the government and Maharashtra is one of the states where the paediatricians and gynaecologists will be trainers who in turn will train medical officers and paramedical staff all over India,says Dr Pramila Menon from the department of genetics,immunology and biochemistry,Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.

Dr Prashant Gangal spoke on the new WHO growth charts .

He said this new system will diagnose more number of malnourished children. The existing grading system (IAP) that takes into account weight-for-age assessment of undernutrition is going to be replaced with WHO’s new growth-monitoring standards.

Dr Sanjay Prabhu stressed on Infant and Young Child Nutrition.
