The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has suspended all construction activities for one week following the rise in Air Quality Index (AQI) in the industrial city. The civic administration said there are currently over 1,500 construction sites across the city. ''We have banned all construction activities for one week. The decision has been taken in view of the rise in Air Quality Index up to 300 during the Diwali period,'' Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh told The Indian Express. Civic body officials said the curbs will be enforced from Thursday as there are no construction activities for two days due to Diwali holidays. The PCMC commissioner said the decision is based on the Bombay High Court order on November 10. ''The court had said that if during Diwali period the AQI rises, the civic bodies should take appropriate decision,'' he said, adding that the administration will modify its order once the AQI comes down. ''We are monitoring the situation on a daily basis. If the AQI comes down,'' he said. PCMC city engineer Makrand Nikam said that they have already collected a fine of Rs 26 lakh from these construction sites as well as other people for violating environmental norms. The PCMC has set up 16 squads to keep a check on any violation of the environmental norms and issued guidelines for builders.
