Having announced that the state would bring an ordinance for the proposed Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2015, which, however, could not be discussed due to lack of time during the winter assembly, state education minister Vinod Tawde said that it won’t be a long wait anymore. Tawde, who was in Pune on Monday, said that the hurdles in bringing an ordinance are being cleared.
“I will be holding discussions with a few members of both the Houses on Tuesday and Wednesday where we would discuss the draft. I will be noting down their suggestions and objections if any and it will we incorporated into the new Act. In any situation, we want to bring the Ordinance before June and hence we hope to finish off the process soon,” Tawde said.
Tawde said that former higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope, leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and a few MLCs such as Satish Chavan and Janardhan Chandurkar would be present for the meeting.
Tawde, who was speaking at a late evening event in Khadki, was interuppted by Congress leader Sharad Ranpise who questioned him as to why his party leaders had not been invited for the event. The minister tried to evade the situation by saying that all party representatives would be spoken to.
The key features of the proposed Maharashtra Public Universities Bill, 2015, include introduction of students’ elections, students’ representation in the University’s management council and board of studies, more sub-campuses of universities, full-time deans and directors of various boards for a fixed five-year term, more power in the hands of vice-chancellors, setting up a separate board for selection of teachers and principals.
