A man in his mid-30s who was undergoing psychiatric treatment and treatment for a leg injury at Pune’s Sassoon General Hospital allegedly died by suicide on the hospital premises in the early hours of Thursday. The police said that the man was admitted to the state-run hospital earlier this month following a suicide attempt.
The incident took place around 6 am. Officials from the Bundgarden police station, which has jurisdiction over the hospital, said that the deceased hailed from Solapur district. “Hospital authorities only have his first name. No known address and contact of next of the kin is available at this point. We have launched a probe to establish his identity,” an officer said.
“Initial information suggests that the patient was admitted to Sassoon General Hospital by railway police personnel. It has come to light that he had allegedly attempted suicide on railway track and had sustained a severe leg injury. He was admitted to the Sassoon Hospital on September 5 and had since been under treatment. In the early hours of Thursday, the patient died by suicide. A case of sudden death pending probe into causes has been registered at the Bundgarden police station,” the officer added.
The police said that as part of the investigation they would check the CCTV cameras on the hospital premises and also record statements of hospital staff and doctors to establish the sequence of events leading to the man’s death.
Earlier this month, a woman prisoner from Haryana who was under treatment at the Regional Mental Hospital in Pune’s Yerawada was found dead in a suspected case of suicide. The woman, who was lodged in Maharashtra’s Parbhani prison, was brought to the hospital for treatment with the court’s permission after she reportedly experienced mental health issues. She was admitted on July 31 and was found unresponsive in her hospital ward on the morning of September 3.
