Act tough against traffic offenders,cops told

Stating that the traffic police must not entertain traffic offenders who try to bully them by taking the names of political leaders,including his own,State Energy and Water Resources Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday directed the traffic police to take stern action against them.

He also directed the traffic cops to jam those who put fancy number plates putting letters that resemble numbers.

Dwelling upon the grave traffic situation of the city,Pawar said,“ While about 60 lakh people reside in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad area the number of vehicles is 24 lakh,out of which 17 lakh are two-wheelers. Besides,about 4 lakh vehicles pass through Pune daily.”

City Police Commisioner Satyapal Singh,who spoke in Marathi,said,“In Mumbai,there are 2,700 traffic police personnel,while in Pune the number is just 700,which we are going to increase by another 300. Residents of Pune,which is known as the cultural capital,should show some culture when they drive on the roads.”

Singh added that the government has sanctioned Rs 6 crore for procuring traffic surveillance cameras for the traffic police.
