99-year-old man injured in fire caused due to gas leak at home

The fire brigade officials have identified the victim as Baburao Dattatraya Mahamuni, resident of an apartment on the sixth floor of Dnyaneshwar Housing Society, located near the Shankar Maharaj Math in Dhankawadi area.

A 99-year-old man was left injured in an incident of fire caused due to a domestic gas leak at his residence in Dhankawadi on the Pune Satara road on Sunday afternoon.

The fire brigade officials have identified the victim as Baburao Dattatraya Mahamuni, resident of an apartment on the sixth floor of Dnyaneshwar Housing Society, located near the Shankar Maharaj Math in Dhankawadi area.

The control room of the Pune Fire Brigade received a call around 1 pm regarding a fire at this apartment. Soon, a fire brigade team reached the spot. Firemen found that leakage of domestic gas in the kitchen of the apartment had caused the fire.

Fire officer Santosh Bhilare said the 99-year-old victim was alone at the apartment when the incident took place. Bhilare said, “The victim may have started the gas stove for cooking or other purposes. But the gas leaked out and caused a fire that spread across the kitchen. Some items in the kitchen, the electric wires and the paint on the kitchen walls were damaged in the incident. The victim also received burn injuries…..”

“Neighbours noticed the smoke coming out of the apartment. They got the victim out and called the fire brigade. We reached the spot and doused the flames within a few minutes. The victim’s relatives were informed about the incident, while he was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition was stable,” said Bhilare.
