450 girls awarded scholarships by Lila Poonawalla Foundation
The post-graduate scholarships were for all the discipline, while the undergraduate scholarship were applicable for girls who were pursuing engineering
Nineteen-year-old Prajakta Gilbile aspires to be an engineer. She is at present pursuing her second year E&TC engineering from Singhagad College in Ambegaon. The burden of her enormous fee fell on her parents, who are handicapped. However, she was one of the 450 deserving girls, who were recently awarded scholarships by the Lila Poonawalla Foundation.
I received a scholarship of Rs 50,000, Gilbile said, adding that she had applied for the merit-cum-need scholarship sometime back and was selected by the foundation.
Like Gilbile,Preeti Pardeshi, who is pursuing her MSc in microbiology from Annasaheb Magar Mahavidyalaya, too received the scholarship. Her father is paralysed, while her mother is the sole earning member of her family. To earn some extra money, she participates in the Earn & Learn programme that is held at her college. However, the scholarship has helped ease the burden of her fees. I can now pay more attention to academics than work, said Pardeshi.
The post-graduate scholarships were for all the discipline, while the undergraduate scholarship were applicable for girls who were pursuing engineering (BE,diploma and 2nd year engineering after diploma),science, pharmacy, diploma in education (DEd),physiotherapy, nursing and architecture.
Lila Poonawalla said from the number of applications they received, which was more than 1,200,it was evident that awareness about the importance of imparting higher education to girls was growing, especially in rural areas.
