The Pune rural police arrested three youths and detained three minors in connection with the murder of a 25-year-old IT professional, who was found dead in Shindewadi area along the road towards Old Katraj Tunnel on Tuesday. Police said one of the accused — a 17-year-old boy — held a grudge against the victim as the techie did not approve of the accused’s relationship with a minor girl.

Saurabh Swami Athawale, a native of Mohol taluka in Solapur district who lived in Mangdewadi area of Pune, worked for a Japanese engineering major. On the morning of August 19, a morning walker spotted Athawale’s body on a small unpaved road next to a hill in Shindewadi area along the road towards Old Katraj Tunnel. Pune rural police found that his family had filed a missing person’s case at Bharati Vidyapeeth police station on August 18 evening after Athwale could not be contacted or traced. An FIR was registered by his elder brother Sangram (28) at Rajgad police station on Tuesday.

The police formed four teams to probe the case. One team spoke to relatives and friends of the deceased while the others worked on technical leads, including footage from CCTV cameras. The leads police to zero in on six persons, including three minors. As the police started searching for them, they got information that two minors and two adult suspects were coming to Chaturmukh temple in Gogalwadi area of Haveli taluka. After these four suspects were apprehended, two others were also nabbed.

Police have detained a 17-year-old boy — who they believe is the main suspect — and two other minors aged 16 and 17. The three others arrested have been identified as Shrimant Anil Gujje (21), Sangam Namdeo Kshirsagar (19) and Nitin Trimbak Shinde (18). Police said the minors have completed their education till Class 10 and currently do small jobs. The three arrested also do small-time jobs.

“Investigation revealed the 17-year-old was staying with his aunt in Mangdewadi area. He was in a relationship with a minor girl staying in the same building. Saurabh, who too lived in the same building, considered the girl like his sister. When Saurabh learnt about the relationship between the minor suspect and the girl, he told the girl’s family about it. Because of this, the minor was sent to his parents’ home in Vadgaon Maval. He nursed a grudge against Saurabh,” said an officer from Pune rural police.

“Probe suggests the suspect took the victim to a secluded location next to a hill in Shindewadi area and murdered him with sharp weapons. The three arrested were produced before a court in Pune and sent to police custody till August 25. The minors have been arraigned before the Juvenile Justice Board,” said the officer.
