When Delhi airport’s terminal 3 is inaugurated by the Prime Minister on Saturday,a locally-manufactured carpet is likely to be the cynosure of all eyes. A large workforce in Mulshi spent the better part of the year working on what is arguably the largest ever commercial order in the world for a carpet for a single customer. The carpet is spread over an area of 1,70,000 sq metres or 24 football fields.

The order was bagged by UK’s Brintons Carpets that has made carpets for the White House and 10 Downing Street. The manufacturing work was done at Brintons Carpets Asia Pvt Ltd,the company’s Asia manufacturing unit in Mulshi. As many as 320 labourers and 20 weaving machines worked tirelessly for four months to put together the piece that was transported to Delhi by 85 containers each 30 feet long.

“The basic design depicts Delhi’s Connaught Place as seen by Google Earth. The main colour is brown and the carpets have been laid out at the arrival, commercial and departure areas,” said MM Kamath, director,Brintons Asia. He said the design was chosen on suggestions by the Delhi International Airport Ltd and later fine-tuned by a team of designers in Pune. “We have 100 designers here and the designing for all the orders for the company for all parts of the world is done in Pune,” said Kamath adding that work on projects for Singapore’s Changi airport, the Hong Kong airport and most of the casinos in Las Vegas have been carried out in the city.

Satish Karanjkar, administration in-charge of the company, said the order had been bagged by Brintons two years ago and manufacturing began last year in Mulshi. Kamath said the size posed logistical challenges for the team. The carpet was dispatched piece by piece as production progressed with the last consignment going in January this year after which the team moved to Delhi for the installation.

Brintons’ global sales and marketing director Jon Stone had earlier said that the carpet was “one of the most visually stunning carpets that has ever been installed in an airport.”
