Patna Police have lodged a case against Nagendra Rai, the nephew of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, for allegedly demanding Rs 2 crore from a Danapur builder to "allow him to construct" a multi-storey building along the Danapur-Khagaul Road. Rai, who has several criminal cases pending against him, is out on bail in connection with a 2017 case of intimidating the previous owner of the same land plot, which was sold to builder Shubh Saurya Infrastructure Private Limited. Nitin Kumar, Director, Shubh Saurya, lodged a case on March 13 after the incident took place on March 11 when Kumar was getting the land measured before construction. Kumar said in the FIR: "As soon as the police team left after the measurement of land, Nagendra Rai came to the plot with over two dozen aides and flashed his pistol asking how we can start the construction without paying him money. Nagendra Rai demanded Rs 2 crore extortion from the builder". Kumar added he had entered into an agreement with a person called Subhash Rai on August 14, 2020. He said Subhash had filed a case of criminal intimidation against Nagendra at the Danapur police station in 2017 and that Nagendra is out on bail in the same case. He also said Subhash Rai had written to IG, Patna, in December 2019, alleging constant threats from Nagendra. Subhash had then decided to engage a builder to raise a multi-storey on his land. Nagendra Rai is the son of Lalu Prasad's elder brother. In an audio clip of a conversation between Kumar and an official of the Danapur police station, which is going viral, Kumar can be heard accusing police personnel of "not reaching the spot in time when Nagendra Rai and his aides had been firing". When the builder threatened to complain about the local police's inaction, a person can be heard saying, “Paglait hai kya (Is he crazy)?”. By the time, Danapur police had reached the spot, Nagendra Rai and his aides had left. Danapur Additional Superintendent of Police Abhinav Dhiman told The Indian Express: "We have lodged a case against Nagendra Rai for demanding extortion from a builder. Rai has also lodged a counter case of having a brawl with builder's men. We have not yet questioned Nagendra Rai. The local police station has been looking into the case". Nagendra Rai was not available for his comments.
