After two successive years of water cuts through the summer, the city is unlikely to be burdened with any cuts this year, provided the monsoon arrives on time and is a normal one.
At present, the total water available in Mumbais water supply lakes is more than double of what was available the same time last year and officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are hopeful that the city will not have to face any major water cuts this year.
Hydraulic Engineer V Bambale said the situation is fairly comfortable and if the rainfall is satisfactory, like the last year, there will be no need to impose water cuts.
As of now,it does not look like we will need to impose a cut. But as the summer progresses and later the rainy season,we will have to take a decision based on these factors, said Bambale.
While the current available water content in all the six lakes on Thursday was 4,80,708 million litres, the available content on the same day last year was 2,39,231 million litres. About 3,350 million litres of water is supplied to the city per day as opposed to the actual demand of over 4,000 million litres.
The two biggest lakes,Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa, constituting the highest percentage of the supply, have significantly more amount of water than last year, which has led to the situation being comfortable.
