When the skies opened up

Surplus water in lakes

Officials of the BMC’s hydraulic engineering department had a cause for cheer as the 48 hours from 6 am on Friday saw heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the lakes that supply Mumbai’s drinking water. About 61,555 million litres was added to the six lakes during this period.

Rail services disrupted

While Western and Central Railway were running 15 minutes behind schedule,services were severely disrupted on CR’s Harbour Line throughout the day,stopping completely for about 40 minutes on Sunday afternoon.

Waterlogging

An official from the disaster management cell of the BMC said not many complaints about disruption of routine life were received. Of the total 182 draining pumps installed by the BMC across the city,34 had to be made operational in city,27 in eastern suburbs and 24 in western suburbs as the water level rose over six inches above the ground.

Injuries

Gusty winds coupled with heavy rain caused a tree to collapse at Antop Hill late on Saturday,injuring five persons. Laxman Vasant Waghware (24),Ashok Mehto (30),Seema Mehto (25),Aditya Mehto (3),and three-month-old Indrajit Mehto were injured when a tree located on a hillock at Indiranagar fell on their shanty near the Antop hill post office. The injured were rushed to KEM Hospital and the infant is critical,said doctors.

Casualties

The bodies of the two youths,who had drowned at Kharghar’s Pandavkada waterfall,were found by the police on Sunday,nearly 48 hours after the incident. ‘’Sanjay Bagve’s (24) body was found near the waterfall,while we found Sushil Kumar’s (21) body near the railway bridge close to the creek,’’ said senior police inspector Kiran Patil of Kharghar police station. Bagve and Kumar had drowned on Friday evening when they had gone to the waterfall. Bagve,a resident of Khar and a driver,was swept away while trying to help someone. Navy Nagar resident and engineering student Kumar,on the other hand,slipped and was carried away by the strong current. The police have appealed to locals and others to avoid visiting the waterfall during the monsoon.
