The phone at the middle-class Goregaon household of Tanvi Lonkar didn’t stop ringing on Monday,as congratulations came flowing.

Tanvi plays a young Latika in Slumdog Millionaire.

Her 75-year old grandmother can’t wait for her to return from LA. “I want to hug her. She has made us so proud,” says Shakuntala Lonkar.

The Lonkars were up early to watch the awards ceremony on TV. To their surprise, they found that some of the neighbours too were up to have a glimpse of the girl they’ve been seeing since childhood. “We were glued to the TV since morning; it is unbelievable,a magical feeling,” says Tanvi’s mother Sharmila.

According to Tanvi’s grandmother, the equal recognition given to the other actors apart form the “leading lady” was very positive and encouraging. “Not only the lead actors, but also the kids were in the spotlight,” she says.

Tanvi wants to be an astronomer or a pilot. But if she decides to take up acting as a career, the family will support her. “Movies are an option for her if she’s willing, but education is crucial,” says Sharmila.

Tanvi’s sister Jhanvi was elated to see her sister on TV. But she was disappointed as she could not attend the Oscars. The seven-year-old had also wanted to play Latika, but she has now got over it. She now asks,“Why can’t we go there (LA)?”
