Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s remarks about PhD aspirants has created a stir with the Opposition Congress alleging that the state government was “making mockery” of students by making such statements.

During the discussion about extending benefits to Maratha students through Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Research, Training and Human Development Institute (SARTHI) at legislative council on Tuesday, Congress MLC Satej Patil spoke about fellowships given to PhD aspirants.

Interrupting Patil, Ajit Pawar said: “What is the use of doing PhD?(Kay dive lavnar PhD karun?)”.

The Congress MLC asked how could Pawar say so and said the scheme of giving fellowship will increase the number of students from Maharashtra with PhD. Referring to Pawar’s statement, Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole said that the statement shows Pawar’s “arrogance”.  “Education is our right. Great men like Chhatrapati Shahu, Mahatma Phule, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar laid the foundation of education and it reached all over the country. Ajit Pawar’s statement is against the education system,” said Patole.

Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Ambadas Danve said that the state government was making a mockery of students by making such statements. “The statement is nothing but the mockery of students. It should not have happened. This statement also shows the arrogance of this government,” said Danve.

Amol Mitkari, MLC and spokesperson of Ajit Pawar – led NCP claimed that the comment was not for all PhD students but was only for those who take disadvantage of schemes and fellowships. “I was inside the house when Ajit Dada said this. He meant that the PhD holders should use their knowledge for the benefit of the people and shouldn’t waste it. I urge PhD students to not get agitated over this,” said Mitkari.
