Ajmal Amir Kasab’s alleged confession gives an insight into the training he is believed to have received. Excerpts:

“When we were in Sarai Alamgir, people from Jamaat-ul-Dawa used to conduct camps in different places. We used to go there and listen to them at those camps. At that time,we both decided to take training for jihad. The training given to us included long-distance running, mountain climbing, handling Kalashaan (AK-47 rifle),pistols, rifles, hand grenades, rocket launchers, using SAT Phones,GPS system and map reading and the most important was going hungry for 60 hours and climb a mountain with bags on the back.

“During Daura-e-Ribaat (intelligence training),we were taught the work of an intelligence agency. It included how to gather information about target, how to keep a watch on the target, how to follow him and how to mislead if we were followed — if we were followed in a vehicle then how to keep the right indicator on if you want to turn left and take a sharp left. By doing so,you’d know if you are being followed. During the mission, your identity should not be found out and how to mislead by giving false identity.

“During our training at sea,we were taught how to use maps, how to gauge the depth of the sea,how to use GPS to make a sea route, how to use fishermen’s net and how to control a ship. While crossing the sea, navy guards may suspect us. So to mislead them by telling that we were fishermen,we were trained in this.

“We 10 were made into five badiyas (groups of two). I was paired with Ismail Khan. We were told that after leaving Karachi in a boat,we had to hijack an Indian boat to go to Mumbai. You have to take the Indian boat to Mumbai, which is India’s financial strength because of foreign visitors. So to destroy the financial power, you have to attack places that are frequented by foreigners, and other places as well.”
