Despite being part of the ruling alliance with the BJP and securing the original party name and the symbol of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) from his uncle Sharad Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar now stares at an uncertain political future as only one out of his five candidates emerged victorious on Tuesday.

In what turned out to be one of the most high-profile battles in the country, Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra faced defeat at the hands of his cousin sister and incubent MP Supriya Sule, daughter of veteran politician Sharad Pawar in the family’s home turf Baramati. This was for the first time that two members of Pawar family faced each other in an electotal battle. Ajit Pawar had made it a prestige battle by choosing to be stationed in Baramati and overseeing the campaign for his wife.

Not only did he lose the battle in Baramati but also could not win Shirur, the other LS seat in Pune district. NCP-SP’s incumbent Amol Kolhe defeated his party’s candidate Shivajirao Adhalrao -Patil. Another of his family member Archana Patil who was contesting from Osmanabad seat also lost to Shiv Sena – UBT’s Omprakash Rajenimbalkar. The party also lost in Lakshadweep where it had won in 2019.

The poor electoral performance comes on the background of increasing differences within the party’s senior leaders and feeling within the party workers of being sidelined in the ruling alliance. Senior minister Chhagan Bhujbal has already been making contradictory statements to the party’s stand and has also openly spoken about the need to demand 80-90 seats in the coming state assembly polls.

Some of the party MLAs, like deputy assembly speaker Narhari Zirwal were reprotedly seen at the campaign of opposition candidates during the general election campaign. Sources within the party have also confirmed that several party MLAs have tried to reconnect with Sharad Pawar.

Ajit Pawar himself is facing trouble in the Pune hit and run case after the allegations of involvement of one his party MLAs in ensuring the release of the minor accused.
