The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief termed the government’s recently announced ₹31,628-crore relief package “a mockery' of farmers and demanded an immediate release of the relief promised (Express File photo by Sankhadeep Banerjee)A war of words erupted between Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis with the Sena (UBT) chief accusing the latter of neglecting the state’s distressed farmers while focusing only on the Bihar elections, to which the CM responded that Thackeray is only interested in criticism and incapable of presenting even a single development idea.
Launching his four-day Marathwada tour from Nandar village in Paithan taluka on Wednesday , Thackeray criticised the BJP-led government for setting June 30, 2026 as the deadline to decide on a farm loan waiver, calling it “unacceptable” and insensitive towards the farmers who are facing acute distress owing to losses they suffered from heavy rains and floods.
Thackeray’s criticism comes after Fadnavis last week announced that the government would decide on the loan waiver by June next year, citing the need to first ensure flood relief and prepare for the Ragbi season.
A committee headed by chief economic adviser Pravinsinh Pardeshi has been formed to study the matter.
“The CM is campaigning in Bihar when farmers here are suffering. When I was the CM, I had waived off the farm plan without even thinking or assessing anything because it was important for the farmers. We had done this despite not making any pre-election promise. But this government led by Fadnavis is not doing it even as they have made the promise before the polls,” he said.
“Now CM is checking a muhurat to announce waving of the farm. He said if now the loan is waived off then banks will be benefited and hence the government will do it in June. I want to ask the simple question, in June how would the banks would not be benefited. On top of it, if the government plans to waive loans next June, should farmers keep paying the instalments till then?,”Thackeray asked while addressing farmers in Pali village of Beed district.
The former chief minister also demanded an immediate loan waiver and demanded ₹50,000 per hectare compensation for flood and rain affected farmers. Uddhav termed the government’s recently announced ₹31,628-crore relief package “a mockery’ of farmers and demanded an immediate release of the relief promised under the ₹31,628-crore package announced last month.
In response to Thackeray’s criticism, Fadnavis hit back while speaking to reporters in Kolhapur, saying the Uddhav was “only interested in criticism and incapable of presenting even a single development idea” “Thackeray can’t move beyond taunting and criticising the government and making jibes. He can never speak about development ideas. I have said it earlier, if anyone shows me that he(Uddhav) is speaking about any development idea then a prize money would be given. But It’s good that, at least now he has at least started stepping out of his house,” the CM said.
During his interactions with farmers in several villages, several farmers complained that despite damage assessments being completed, no compensation had been credited to their accounts.
