Two suspected cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in Nagpur, involving children aged 7 and 13 years, along with another suspected case in Mumbai.
Speaking at a press conference, State Health Minister Prakash Abitkar said both children in Nagpur tested positive for HMPV at a private hospital. After treatment, they were discharged. However, the cases will be confirmed only after the results of further examination at AIIMS Nagpur arrives.
The minister also dismissed suggestions of reintroducing measures such as patient isolation and mandatory mask-wearing as it was done during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In Mumbai, a six-month-old infant admitted to Hiranandani Hospital last week is suspected to be having HMPV. The infant, with fever, cough and breathing difficulties, was nebulised and treated to relax lung muscles and open airways. Her fever subsided within 24 hours and her condition improved significantly.
The swab sample was sent for testing, with preliminary results indicating suspected HMPV infection. Consultant paediatrician Dr Sanjeev Ahuja said, “So far, the virus appears to cause mild symptoms, primarily affecting the upper respiratory tract. Testing is recommended only in severe cases requiring hospitalisation.”
The infant, admitted on January 1, was discharged on January 5 after recovery. Previously, SRCC Hospital in Mumbai recorded three suspected HMPV cases in the last six months.
First identified in 2001, HMPV is a respiratory virus that generally causes mild symptoms. Health officials are monitoring its spread while urging caution, particularly in severe respiratory cases. The public is advised to remain informed but not panic.
