The Azad Maidan police have arrested two men for mobile phone thefts. According to the police, these men have duped five youths asking them to hand over their mobile phones to them on the pretext of verifying their list of contacts and fled the spot, said the police.

According to the police, the incident occurred in November 2008 while five youths — Kumar Urvesh,Romit Shah and other three friends— were in the middle of a game of pool at S-2 Bar,Fort. As per the youths’ statements, two seemingly angry men approached them and accused the youths of sending some lewd messages to their sisters. “The men asked the youths to give their mobile phones to delete their sisters’ phone numbers from the contact list. Frightened, the youths handed over the phones to them. Pretending to fiddle with the phones, the duo went downstairs and the youths followed them. However, while one of the men engaged the youths in conversation, the other suddenly revved up his two-wheeler and the duo fled the spot with the mobile phones,” said Assistant Police Inspector Dhananjay Sonawane of the Azad Maidan police station.

According to the police, though the boys chased the men, they couldn’t catch the duo. Later, these youths have filed a complaint with the Azad Maidan police.

“We had tracked the phones using their IMEI numbers and came to know that one of the phones was with one Yasin Yusuf Khan, who told us that one Sarfaraz alias Sarfu Ibrahim Sheikh had given him the cell. On Monday,we arrested Sheikh. His arrest led us to Mohammed Ruzwan alias Lala Mohammed Salim Mansuri on Tuesday. Mansuri, who had stolen one of the mobile phones, had handed it over to one Mohammad Husain Abdul Rehman Khatri,” said Sonawane.

The police recovered both cell phones—one from Khan and the other from Khatri— and secured the custody of Sheikh and Mansuri. The police said that the Sheikh had been booked in seven similar crimes.
