Two persons lost their lives in separate accidents on Tuesday evening. A 20-year-old labourer was electrocuted while installing a generator for a social function in Kalachowki. While a 53-year-old shopkeeper died after he got stuck in a lift.

According to Kalachowki police,on Tuesday evening, labourer Harish Chanduram Rajbhor was working at the Vardhaman Heights building in Kalachowki where a social function was scheduled. Between 7 and 8 pm Rajbhor ,who was carrying a bunch of wires to connect them to a generator, suddenly collapsed. “The residents who were organising the function had hired a generator from ACM Power,a private company, and Rajbhor who was working at the spot was engaged in wiring the generator. The machine was kept inside the building and Rajbhor was carrying the wires inside to connect it to the power supply unit outside when he collapsed.  He was rushed to JJ Hospital by local residents where he was declared dead before admission,” said Vishnu Poman, senior police inspector,Kalachowki police station.

According to the police,Rajbhor’s body is still at the morgue as his family members do not live in the city. According to his friends,Rajbhor had come to the city a few years back to earn a living and support his large family back home. “His family didn’t have any money to sponsor his sister’s wedding. She is about to be married later this month but now he wont be there to see it,” said Rajbhor’s friend Ravindra Singh who had approached the Kalachowki police to register a complaint of negligence.

“We have registered a case of accidental death and will be investigating the case further after recording the statements of witnesses and the residents who were organising the event. We are also on the lookout for the people who were operating the generator,” said police sub-inspector Suresh Walke.

In another incident 53-year-old Mohammed Ismail Qureshi, died after a lift malfunction. Qureshi had returned home from Qatar for a two-month vacation. “Qureshi, his wife and their eldest daughter were on their way to his ailing sister who stays in Ahmed Palace,a newly constructed 16 storeyed highrise that has come up in Madanpura,Agripada. They were getting into the lift when suddenly the doors of the lift shut on him and trapped,” said Ashik Qureshi,Qureshi’s brother-in-law.

“Unlike normal lift doors which would immediately open upon confronting a hindrance, this lift began moving upwards. Qureshi lost his balance and was lifted upwards where his head repeatedly kept hitting the rim of the shaft. He fell on the floor but both his legs were still trapped inside and they were badly fractured. My sister tried to open the doors but could not. She has also suffered injuries on her hands. Their daughter was carrying her three month-old child who also fell on the floor of the lift due to the impact but wasn’t hurt,” he added.

Hearing the commotion, the residents of the building came to the family’s rescue and managed to free them from the lift. “Qureshi was rushed to the Nair Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. After his funeral,we plan to follow this case as one amounting to negligence. In a newly constructed building, the lift malfunctions and there is no security guard to call for help,” said Ashik.
