Two arrested for attacking constable

Two people were arrested on Saturday night for allegedly attacking a constable attached to the Malad police station.

Two people were arrested on Saturday night for allegedly attacking a constable attached to the Malad police station. The victim Mangesh Naik,was the recipient of a bravery award for his work during the 26/11 terror attack.

This is the sixth incident where police personnel were beaten up in the past two months.

Police said at 9 pm on Saturday,they received a phone call about a riot-like situation near Bata showroom on SV Road. Naik and constable S Lavan left for the spot on a motorcycle.

Naik said he saw two groups of about 15 people were fighting at the spot. He stopped the motorcycle in the middle of the ruckus. “On seeing the constables,the men began pelting stones. One stone hit Naik on his head,” said an officer from the Malad police station.

Naik fell and the attackers began to flee. The two constables chased the men and nabbed two men — Mangesh Kadam and Firoz Shaik. Both are residents of Laljipada in Kandivali (West) and work as caterers,police said.

Naik was rushed to a hospital nearby and released after treatment. “We informed the control room immediately and handed the two over to the police station,” said Naik.

“We are trying to trace their accomplice. He should be nabbed soon,” said another official.

The two have been booked under Sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from their duty),353 (use of criminal force to deter a public servant on duty) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code. The duo was produced before a holiday court on Sunday and remanded in police custody till October 31.
