This year will be full of light-hearted stories and comedies for Konkona Sen Sharma, the actress who is usually known for her serious and experimental work. The soon-to-be-released Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge on March 5 will be followed by Vinay Shukla’s Mirch in April, which she calls a sassy drama. Also in April will be Sunglass,a film that is directed by Rituparno Ghosh and will release in Bengali and Hindi,“It’s a humorous film where once I wear the sunglasses,I will be able to know what the people around me are thinking,” she reveals. With all the comedies coming up this year, the actress is sure she’ll get the much-needed image makeover.

Though it is her roles in parallel and experimental cinema that first brought her under the limelight,Sen Sharma maintains that she does not give that genre a preference. “People have this notion that anything that is parallel cinema will be good. They come to me with scripts and expect me to take up anything that they label as non-commercial. While I fully support the cause of small budget films and experimental ideas,I can’t do any generic role. I need something to excite me.”

Currently, however, she is inspired by an interview with actor Naseeruddin Shah that she recently read where the veteran actor talks about love and his character in Ishqiya. “I really do want to be part of a love story,” she smiles. While Wake up Sid could be called a romantic flick,Sen Sharma chooses to refer to it as a coming-of-age film that was not the typical intense romantic. “Naseer ji said that after all these years this was the first time that he got the chance to play a love-struck man. It’s then that I realised I haven’t played a role like that either.”

Despite such a successful phase in commercial mainstream films, the 30-year-old who was launched by her illustrious mother Aparna Sen in Bengali film Ek Je Aachhe Kanya, isn’t ready to give up her career in regional cinema and will soon be seen in her mother’s next,Iti Mrinalini. “I don’t have an agenda or career plan that I want to stick to. I just want to do any films that interest me,language is not a barrier at all.”

Widely admired for her acting skills,it’s her look and style — cotton kurtas and long skirts in variations — that are often a subject of criticism. “This is the way that I normally dress and I guess it suits me and the characters I play. I think I’m quite an obedient actress and would be open to wearing whatever the character demands,” she explains. “But,I don’t like my knees very much,” she adds shyly,“So that’s why I think twice before wearing anything short.”
