Tithi Bhojan to be replicated across state, says Tawde

‘TITHI BHOJAN’, a community participatory model followed by the Gujarat government in the mid-day meal programme, would now be replicated across Maharashtra, said School Education and Sports Minister Vinod Tawde on Wednesday. Tawde also said the education department and the nodal agencies for implementation of the mid-day meal scheme across the state would prepare a detailed plan on the implementation of the scheme.

The proposal to start the Tithi Bhojan scheme in all other states across the country was also cleared by an empowered committee of the mid-day meal scheme at a meeting chaired by HRD Minister Smriti Irani in October last year.

Under the initiative that was adopted by the Gujarat government in 2012-13, food is voluntarily served among school children by villagers, locals or various community members in several forms such as sweet, namkeen, dry fruits etc with the regular mid-day meal and supplementary nutritive items such as sprouted beans.

Tawde, in a meeting with the officials concerned on Wednesday, directed them to start chalking out plans and ways to implement Tithi Bhojan scheme across the state.

“The objective is to inculcate a feeling of equity and brotherhood among the children of all communities and reduction of the gap between the school administration, locals and community, the general public. The initiative will also ensure that school kids get variety in food served to them under mid-day meal through Tithi Bhojan scheme.

The schools must also ensure that food served under Tithi Bhojan should be of good quality,” Tawed said. “It was decided to introduce the practice of Tithi Bhojan across the country by HRD ministry, based on its success in Gujarat,” said an official with the school education department.

Tawde said a study group should be formed to look at implementation of the scheme at school level.The department concerned look for an alternative name for the scheme.

‘New sports to be included in state-level school competitions’

Tawde on Wednesday also suggested that the Directorate of Sports and Youth Services, Maharashtra, must set up a committee to decide what new sports should be included in school-level competitions. Tawde said the aim is to urge youths to take up new games that are played at the Olympics and other international sports events. The issue was discussed at meeting at Mantralaya on Wednesday, he said.
