To stall construction, the three accused even lodged a police complaint against the contractor of the site (File Photoi)Three persons were arrested for allegedly threatening and demanding Rs 45 lakh from a Mumbai-based builder, police said Sunday.
Police said the three accused had allegedly lodged false complaints with police and local administration and spread misinformation about the builder’s project. Police officials said Harwardhan Jadhav (26), Aniket Jadhav (26) and Irfan Tamboli (42) are from Vita town in Sangli.
In 2022, the complainant named Prashant Patil bought land from Jadhav’s aunt in Vita and started building a complex. Subsequently, Jadhav and Aniket went to Vita police station, Tehsildar office, Sangli’s collector and civic body office and lodged 25 complaints against Patil, alleging irregularities in his site.
To stall construction, the three accused even lodged a police complaint against the contractor of the site. “Despite the complaints, there was no official letter or verbal communication from any department to stop construction work but still the complainant decided to speak to them to understand the problem,” said an investigator adding, “During the conversation, the three demanded Rs 45 lakh to withdraw the complaints.”
Meanwhile, police said they even advertised in a local newspaper claiming the site to be disputed land which created reluctance among people buy a property there.
“The complainant negotiated with them and settled the deal at Rs 30 lakh, and then filed a complaint at Kalachowkie police station ,” said an officer.
The police said that a case was registered under relevant IPC sections of extortion, defamation, criminal intimidation and conspiracy.
The three accused were produced before court which remanded them in police custody.
