The Thane Police have written to the senders of the alleged defamatory emails to directors and clients of software giant Tata Consultancy Services, asking them to co-operate with the investigation. The emails were allegedly sent by forums formed by TCS employees.
TCS had registered a complaint with the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of the Thane Police last week after unidentified individuals sent alleged defamatory emails to TCS directors and clients. The clients were urged not to do business with the firm. According to the complaint, the emails brought “disrepute to the firm” and “harmed business interests.”
According to the police, these emails were sent from two Outlook accounts and one Gmail account. The accounts bear the names of the associations formed by TCS employees – loyaltcser@gmail.com of the TCS Employees Union, sea.tcs@outlook.com of the TCS Software Employees Forum and tcs.employees@outlokk.com of TCS Employees Forum.
“The senders of the emails have not committed a conventional crime which is why we want to hear their side of the story before taking further action. We have written several emails to each of these accounts, but are yet to receive a reply. If they do not come forward, we will trace them,” said Inspector Sanju John of the Thane cyber cell.
John added, “We have written to the Gmail and Outlook servers asking for the identities of the account-holders, but receiving such information usually takes time. We are also trying to find the union and forums on social media. Until we identify the senders, we cannot say that these employees forums are responsible for the emails.”
TCS had faced lawsuits from several trade unions and former workers following rumours late last month that hundreds of its employees would be laid-off. Ajit Menon, TCS’s chief security officer, did not comment on the identity of the senders.
