Tension in Nagpur as Shivaji statue defiled

Normalcy returned to the area later in the evening.

Tension prevailed in Mahal area of the city after a Shivaji statue in Gandhi Gate square was found defiled, with agitationists belonging to saffron groups resorting to attacking city buses and forcing a bandh.

The statue was found wrapped with saffron cloth and its sword twisted early Thursday morning.

Local councillors Pravin Datke and Bandu Raut reached the spot followed by Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena, MNS and BJP activists who started burning tyres and attacking buses.

Police officials, including Commissioner of Police K K Pathak, rushed to the spot and held discussions with some senior leaders. The agitationists said they would continue their protest till the culprits were brought to book.

Normalcy returned to the area later in the evening.
