Tarapur MIDC: Four workers dead, 2 critical after nitrogen gas leak at pharma unit

Four workers died and two others were critically injured after inhaling nitrogen gas that leaked from a reaction tank at a pharmaceutical company in Boisar of Palghar district in Maharashtra on Thursday afternoon.

According to officials, the leak took place at Medley Pharma in the Tarapur MIDC area, about 130 km from Mumbai around 2.30 pm, when  a nitrogen reaction tank malfunctioned during routine operations.

At least 36 workers were in the factory and six of them, who were working close to the tank, collapsed. All were rushed to Shinde Hospital in Boisar, where four were declared dead around 6.15 pm. The other two are undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit and remain in a critical condition.

The deceased were identified as Kalpesh Raut, 43, a resident of Chinchani in Dahanu; Bangali Thakur, 46, from Athmalgola in Patna, Bihar; Dheeraj Prajapati, 31, from Shivajinagar in Salwad, Boisar; and Kamlesh Yadav, 31, also a resident of Shivajinagar and originally from Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh.

The two undergoing treatment are Rohan Shinde, 35, a resident of Amrut Residency in Saravali, Boisar, and Nilesh Chandrakant Hadal, 37, from Palegaon in Dahanu.

District administration officials said that the condition of the two injured remains critical. They added that statements of witnesses are being recorded and an inquiry is underway to determine the exact cause of the leak and whether there were lapses in safety procedures.

The Tarapur MIDC, which houses several chemical and pharmaceutical units, has witnessed a series of accidents in recent years.

A police officer from Boisar said they have registered an accidental death report in the matter and further investigation was going on.

“We are conducting a preliminary inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the incident and if there is a negligence,” the officer said.
