Studies, peer pressure and stress had forced eight-year-old Arya Desai to drop out of her Bharatnatyam classes a few months ago. Little did she knew then that she would soon be giving her first solo stage performance. Desai, who had joined Music & Me,is now all set to take the stage this weekend.
A group of young professional danseuses had conceptualised Music & Me a three-day music and dance festival with a dream to promote and revive classical dance forms and music. The initiative will see more than 100,mostly children, participating in the event at Ravindra Natya Mandir.
For Nihal Jai Tilokani, strumming a song on his guitar is no big deal. But for this shy nine-year-old,it is the thought of performing in front of an audience that scares him. Nihal has a passion to play, which is hard to come by in youngsters. In todays world, children forget to do things they really enjoy. As parents,it is our duty to try and help them pursue their passion, his mother Arjuman Jai Tilokani says.
His first public performance at the Music & Me platform has encouraged this Michael Jackson fan to take his hobby seriously.
Though the initiative was intended to encourage young performers, it is not just the young who are learning from it.
Busy work schedules made it difficult for me to pursue Kathak,in which I had trained for a year, says Rachana Shetty,26,co-organiser of Music & Me. She has now quit her full-time job and is learning Kathak along with a freelancing job.
The festival will showcase over 20 groups and solo performances from amateur dancers and professionals. The children will be performing various dance forms such as Bharatnatyam,Kathak,Odissi and Hip-Hop. The music performances will include classical singing and guitar performances.
The initiative also includes a presentation by the NGO Toy Bank. We want to spread awareness on how every child in the country should have toys to play with. This message will be best understood as children understand each other better. We hope to garner support for the movement, said Shweta Chari, founder of Toy Bank.
