Three persons,including two women,suffered injuries when an SUV hit them in Borivali East on Wednesday afternoon. The driver of the vehicle,Suryabhan Avhad (48),was drunk,the police said. He has been arrested. Avhad told the police that the SUVs brakes failed and the vehicle crashed into the pedestrians. Avhad,a resident of Shailendra Nagar in Dahisar East,supplies vehicles to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corpoation (BMC) on contract,the police said. The incident occurred at 12.30 pm when Avhad was on his way home in his Tata Sumo in Kajupada,Dahisar East,the police said. The Sumo was descending a slope when Avhad lost control of it. The vehicle hit Rupali Prajapati (22),Aditi Bate (30) and Hemant Chari (17). Prajapati suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivali. Bate and Chari were taken to Shrikrishna Hospital nearby and discharged after treatment. After the accident,residents of the area nabbed Avhad and handed him over to the police. Preliminary medical examination showed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol,said officers. Officers from the RTO will examine the Sumo to check if the brakes had failed, said an officer. Avhad will be produced before the Borivali court on Thursday. Speeding SUV injures college student A college student suffered injuries when a speeding SUV hit her near Government Colony Road in Haji Ali on Wednesday. The SUV driver also sustained injuries. Police said Genelia S Shaikh (24) was returning home from Lala Lajpat Rai College around 4 pm when the accident occurred. Sudhir K Mathur,who was driving a Ford,lost control of the vehicle and hit Shaikh. The car turned turtle and hit seven other cars parked nearby. Shaikh and Mathur have been admitted to Nair Hospital. We will arrest Mathur once he is discharged, said an officer. 2 hurt in mishap Drivers of an auto-rickshaw and a taxi were injured after the vehicles hit a tempo that applied sudden brakes after jumping a signal on Eastern Express Highway in Vikhroli East Wednesday. Tempo driver Sagar Harpude (21) was going to Borilvali to deliver milk. At 3 pm,he allegedly jumped the signal opposite Godrej Complex but soon braked. As a result,the taxi and autorickshaw behind crashed into its rear causing injuries to their drivers. "The tempo driver did not attempt to flee. He has been booked for rash and negligent driving," said Mahipat Indalkar,senior inspector,Vikhroli police station.
