Assistant Police Inspector of Goregaon police station Shrikrushna Navale said that students from various schools had assembled at INT English School ground in Purar, Goregaon, on Wednesday afternoon for the taluka-level sports competition and the accident occurred during the practice session.
“Around 12.30 pm, Daware threw the javelin and bent to tie his shoe laces. A student from the other side threw the javelin back in his direction unaware that Daware had bent down. When he rose to his feet, the javelin hit him on his head,” Navale said. He added that they are going through the CCTV footage to identify the student.
While it appeared to be an accident, police sources said they were checking the rules that should be followed while playing javelin. An officer said that during the event, the area where the javelin is to be thrown is to be a ‘no man’s land’.
“In this case too, the accident occurred when the event had started. They should have been careful during the practice session as well,” a senior officer said.
