State seeks Central nod to withhold licences till court judgment

The state cabinet accepted a proposal by home department, which was based on recommendations made by retired district judge G N Bhargande.

The state government will ask the Centre to consider invoking a provision where driving licenses are withheld until court judgments are pronounced in drink-driving cases.

The state cabinet Wednesday accepted a proposal by the home department, which was based on the recommendations made by retired district judge G N Bhargande. He was appointed by the state government to probe the deaths of 14 devotees in a truck accident in Jalna in 2011 and the killing of two youths in alleged police firing during protests that ensued. The police had found that the truck driver was drunk at the wheel.

Besides recommending various safety measures for devotees, Bhagrande had recommended stringent punishment for drink-driving. One of his recommendations was that if drunken driving results in death of a person, then the driving license of the offender be cancelled.

The state home department’s proposal before the state cabinet said the recommendations regarding retention of the licence till judgment and the one for stricter penalties were acceptable. It, however, reasoned that amending norms in this regard was beyond the state government’s jurisdiction. It proposed that these be forwarded for action to the centre.
The state cabinet gave its nod to the same.
