After Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray said that his 13 MLAs will keep the government under control, his rival and competitor in the ‘locals versus migrants’ agitation Samajwadi Party said ‘s MLAs have decided to sit in the Opposition.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) has won three seats in Mumbai and one in Navapur (Nandurbar) including two seats for their state leader Abu Azmi. SP is part of the motley group of 17 parties which formed the Republican Left Democractic Front ahead of the elections, and has won 11 seats in the Assembly polls. “We will be in the Opposition in the state Assembly,” SP spokesperson Abdul Kadir Chaudhary said at a press conference. Chaudhary said that the party had won seats not only on support from migrants but also locals who do not like the “communal and regional” divide being created in the state.

“We will not let parties with policies encouraging division on basis of community, region and language dominate in the Assembly. We will keep them in check as they are working against the national interest,” Chaudhary said. Abu Azmi will himself be seen in the state Assembly along with MNS leader like Bala Nandgaonkar.
