THE PALGHAR police arrested a man and his cousin brother for allegedly murdering his 65-year-old father and disposing of his body in the forest on Saturday. The son allegedly did this after his father said he would not give his son any share in the land he owned.
An officer said that on March 9 around 10am, the body of a person was found in a forest area called Gatalpada in Palghar. Based on further probe the police identified the deceased as Krishna Rama Dongarkar.
The post mortem report indicated that he was killed by a sharp knife on the neck apart from other injuries all over his body. Based on this the Kasa police station registered an FIR against unknown persons and began investigating the matter.
A team of Kasa police officers and crime branch officials was formed to probe the matter. The team first questioned the deceased’s son Ramdas. “During the questioning, he kept changing his version of events,” an officer said, “Further he was frequently asking for water and his hands and feet were constantly sweating and he was struggling to speak which made us suspicious,” he added.
Working on this angle, the police found that there was a dispute between the deceased Dongarkar and son Ramdas and a cousin over land inheritance rights. The claim was ongoing at the local government office in Palghar.
The police found that the deceased would keep sharing the fact in the village, that he would not let his son get any share in the land. Ramdas and his cousin Vilas would often discuss their frustrations of not getting any of the land because of his father’s attitude.
An officer said that Ramdas and Vilas hatched a plan to kill the former’s father. On March 8 while the deceased was sleeping at his residence, Ramdas killed him by striking him on the neck with an iron sickle below the cheek.
Later, with the help of Vilas, the body of the deceased was taken from the house and thrown on the side of the road at a distance of about 15 feet in the forest department plot of Somta, Ghatalpada.
Following the probe, the police arrested the duo on the charge of murder.
