Six held for Rs 75-lakh heist at CA’s office near CST

Police said at the time of the dacoity on October 6, there were four employees present, a servant, an accountant and two trainees.

TEN DAYS after armed men barged into a chartered accountant’s office near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and looted Rs 75 lakhs, the Azad Maidan police on Sunday arrested six in connection with the robbery.

Police said the main accused, Shravan Purohit (23), allegedly learnt of the money flow in the CA’s office when one of the latter’s employees expressed his frustrations at work to an acquaintance, who in turn told Purohit about the money flow in the office.

“In such robberies there is always an insider leaking information but in this case we got no such leads,” said Manoj Kumar Sharma, zonal deputy commissioner of police.

Police said at the time of the dacoity on October 6, there were four employees present, a servant, an accountant and two trainees. Investigators said they grilled the accused and got a lead when one of the trainees admitted regularly venting office pressures to an employee of a nearby xerox shop less than 500 meters away.

“The employee and the trainee connected because they both hailed from Rajasthan. The trainee for more than a year has been discussing the environment inside the office to xerox shop employee. Details such as the money flow were spoken about very often,” said an officer.
In August, two months before the dacoity, the xerox shop employee befriended Purohit (23) who also belonged to Rajasthan and worked in the nearby Manish market.

“The xerox shop employee used to go to the CA’s office to get paid. On one such visit Purohit accompanied him and he told him of the money inside the CA’s office. That is when Purohit hatched the plan to loot the office,” said Sharma.

Investigators said Purohit got in touch with 21-year-old Modak Rajput who assembled “a team” for the dacoity.
