The LT Marg police on Thursday arrested six persons, including two jewelers, for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a 50-year-old businessman from South Mumbai over a financial dispute. The accused allegedly confined the victim in a room in Parel, assaulted him and forced him to hand over gold worth Rs. 76 lakh along with a self signed cheque of Rs. 2.99 lakh.
According to police, the arrested accused have been identified as Tarak Maiti (35) and his younger brother Raghunath Maiti (34), both jewellers residing in Navi Mumbai; Deepak Mahadik (45) and his wife Alka, residents of central Mumbai; Rahul Dive (30) from Govandi; and Sunil Gorai (28) from Kalbadevi.
Police said the complainant runs a gold jewelry workshop in South Mumbai. He had allegedly taken 600 grams of gold from the Maiti brothers in the past. The Maiti brothers claimed that the buiness man had cheated them and not returned the gold, while the victim maintained that he had aleady returned it.
“The Maiti brothers told their friend Sunil Gorai that they wanted to teach the victim a lesson. Gorai then contacted Alka, who, along with her husband Deepak and Rahul, hatched a plan to kidnap the victim. Alka and her team demanded a 20 per cent cut from the amount that would be recovered from the victim,” said senior inspector Nitin Tadake of LT Marg police station.
As per the police, Alka, her husband, Rahul, and Sunil waited near the victim’s residence in South Mumbai. Once they spotted him, they forced him into a car and took him to Parel around 10.30 pm on October 14. The accused allegedly locked him in a room on the third floor of a building at an undisclosed location in Parel.
Later, Tarak and Raghunath Maiti reached the spot and allegedly assaulted the complainant over the gold transaction, forcing him to hand over 591 grams of gold worth Rs 76.24 lakh, a cheque of Rs 2.99 lakh, and also made him pay Rs 15,000 through Gpay.
The victim was released the next afternoon, on October 15, after which he went straight to the LT Marg police station. “We recorded his statement and registered the cas,” Tadake added. All six accused were traced and arrested from their residences on the morning of October 16. They have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) , produced in the court and remanded in police custody till October 18.
