The Buldhana police in Maharashtra late on Monday evening registered an FIR against Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad for announcing a Rs 11 lakh reward to anyone who will “chop off the tongue” of Congress leader and leader of opposition in Parliament Rahul Gandhi.

Gaikwad’s comment came in the backdrop of Gandhi’s statements on reservation during his US visit.

While Opposition leaders from Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) slammed Gaikwad and demanded a criminal case to be registered against him, ruling BJP’s state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule distanced himself from the statement saying, “The statement made by Gaikwad cannot be supported.” Meanwhile Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde skirted questions from mediapersons on Gaikwad’s statement.

Congress workers across the state had taken an aggressive stance on the statement made by Gaikwad and had staged protests in some parts of Maharashtra.

In Buldhana, Congress workers staged a sit-in protest demanding action against Gaikwad. A complaint was also lodged against him, based on which an FIR was registered against Gaikwad for criminal intimidation and provocation.

On Tuesday, the police said the FIR has been registered under Sections 351(2) and 351(4) (criminal intimidation), 192 (provocation), and 351(3) (threatening to cause death or hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) at the Buldhana City police station.

Responding to the FIR and protest, Gaikwad said that he is willing to face legal consequences and has no regret for the comment.
