CCI Billiards Boys and Park Club Samurais’ fashioned exciting wins to storm into the quarter-finals of The Zarine & Yazdi Daruvala Charitable Trust Mumbai Billiards League,orgainsed by the Billiards & Snooker Association of Maharashtra,at the Dadar Parsee Colony Gymkhana on Wednesday.
With a blend of youth and experience Billiards Boys halted a gallant P J Hindu Gymkhana Canon Kings 726-713 in a thriller,while Samurais edged out Shivaji Park Gymkhana Golden Eagles 653-574.
Vishal Gehani and Amit Sapru put the Samurais in a strong position after winning the opening two ties convincingly. It left Sanjeev Bijlani a modest target of 78 in the decider against Shekhar Surve that ended the campaign of the Eagles.
I think the Eagles let us off when they played Prashant Mhatre instead of Shekhar Surve in the second tie, explained a relieved Bijlani. I feel it was the turning point and left me an easy target in the end.
Veteran Kekoo Nicholson gave Billiards Boys a dream start before Devansh Jariwala offered Canon Kings hope with a significant 200-156 win over formidable Hasan Badami in the second tie that led the contest into a gripping third tie. Set a target of 166,Devang Shah of Canon Kings came up with impressive shots but fell short by just 13 points while giving CCIs Hitesh Kotwani anxious moments in the gripping decider.
