An accused in a robbery case,who had escaped while being escorted from court to Arthur Road Jail Friday,was re-arrested from Andheri railway station by D N Nagar police.
Police handed Satish Mane,21,to officers from N M Joshi Marg as Arthur Road Jail falls under their jurisdiction.
Police said Mane along with his associates Sunil Lanjhewar (19),Swapnil Sonawane (23) and Nirmal Ikke (19),all residents of Chandrapur was arrested Tuesday while trying to sell stolen goods at Four Bungalows in Andheri (west). The three had allegedly robbed ornaments on June 27 after assaulting a jeweller in Brahmapuri tehsil in Chandrapur district,and had come to Versova where they were staying with Manes relative.
On Friday,while being taken to Arthur Road Jail to be lodged in judicial custody,Mane took advantage of the crowd of inmates and accused outside the jail and fled with handcuffs on.
We alerted our staff at all railway stations as Mane had fled in the direction of Mahalaxmi station. The constables posted at Andheri station nabbed him as soon as he alighted from a train, said inspector Gyaneshwar Devde.
Mane said he wanted to flee to Chandrapur,but did not have money. As the only person he knew in the city was his relative in Versova,he was going to go to him to borrow money and clothes, said Devde. Police are probing negligence on the part of the jail staff and police escorts.
