Following the death of two dogs in a Thane housing society due to alleged poisoning, the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) has announced a reward of Rs 20,000 for providing information leading to the arrest of those responsible. This is the second time in the month that the FIAPO has announced such a reward. On December 3,two dogs in Vijay Vilas Society in Ghodbunder Road,Thane, were found dead due to alleged poisoning. Prior to the incident, some residents had voiced their concern on a Yahoo group about stray dogs living in the building compound. They felt that the dogs were a menace, said Khushboo Gupta, coordinator,FIAPO. This indicates that the likely culprits are residents of the building, she said. Animal lovers in the building had tried to dissuade them and even wrote to Maneka Gandhis People For Animals (PFA) to intervene. An FIR has been filed in the case recently and the police have been questioning the residents, but no arrests have been made. The postmortem report suggests that the dogs were hit by a blunt object and choked. However, vets consulted by FIAPO believe it is a case of poisoning. The cause will be confirmed by a forensic examination which will take a month. We request people to come forward and speak up against injustice to animals, said Gupta. On November 24,FIAPO had announced a similar reward for information on the person responsible for the spurt of cat killings in Versova.
