A leader of one of the factions of the Republican Party of India was allegedly lynched by an angry mob outside his residence in Thane’s Kalwa area early Tuesday morning.
Shankar Kadam (40), the president of RPI (Ektawadi), Kalwa region, died after being attacked by an armed mob of 30 people outside his residence in Gholai Nagar, the police said.
According to the police, seven persons, including women, were injured in the attack and were admitted to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa for treatment.
Kadam was the only casualty as he was attacked with weapons such as swords, knives and sticks, they said.
Police said that the mob went to the leader’s home allegedly demanding better work to be done in the area.
The Kalwa police have registered an FIR in the matter and arrested two persons on charges of murder, attempt to murder, and on charges rioting with armed weapons, unlawful assembly and voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon under the Indian Penal Code. Several persons were reportedly detained by the police for further inquiries.
Thane Police Commissioner Vijay Kamble said incident took place close to midnight. “It was a trivial reason that led to the incident. A stone was thrown at the leader from the crowd, which led a to altercations and unfortunately Kadam’s death,” he said.
According to the police, a law and order problem was created following the incident. “But everything is now under control. There was no unrest reported in the area today,” Kamble said.
“We are still investigating the matter and every possible angle. It is still not clear if the members of the mob belonged to any rival group,” he said.
