The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Vasai has a new and unfamiliar responsibility to shoulder these days of informing people about the procedures of adopting a child.
The GRP is flooded with calls from people willing to adopt two-and-a-half year-old Jyoti, who was found near railway tracks between Naigaon and Vasai on September 16. The police, which are yet to trace the girls parents, have ended up counselling such callers on how the child can be adopted.
We are flooded with calls from people enquiring about Jyoti and expressing their desire to adopt her. There are a lot of procedures and protocols which one has to go through before adopting a child. The details of the person applying for adoption have to be verified with focus on issues like police record, marital status, family background, earning capacity among other things. We have been asking people to approach us only after gathering required information on the adoption process, said senior police inspector N T More from the Vasai GRP said.
More said that enquiries are on to trace Jyotis parents. The girl was found near the Naigaon railway station last week with several injuries on her head, legs and back. According to the Vasai GRP,one Bharat Patil was on his way home around 5 pm when he spotted Jyoti in a pool of muddy water near railway tracks. Patil took her to a primary health care centre in Nallasopara and informed the police about the incident.
More added that the girl is now out of danger but is still unable to tell the police anything about her family or residence. She has only told us her name and we are trying to find out more about her, he added.
More had earlier said,It was being assumed that the girl might have been pushed out of a running train, but after examining the spot where she was found,it seems unlikely.
